The Sparkasse Marathon through the three Lake Constance countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland is legendary and attracts a sports-mad public from all over the world. Starting at the Lindau harbour promenade, the marathon route leads directly along the shore of Lake Constance to Bregenz. Past the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival, the route continues through the Mehrerau Monastery. The customs officers wave runners over the Swiss-Austrian border with cowbells. From St. Margrethen in Switzerland, the route returns via the Rhine dam to the finish stadium in Bregenz. The event includes a full marathon (42.195 km), half marathon (21.0975 km), quarter marathon (10.9 km), walking tracks (21 or 10.9 km), and a relay marathon.
